New list is up! Looks like a slimmer week for me thankfully

New list is up! Some good stuff for me this week it looks like,

I have never read comic books until the last month in which I read the Invincible Series(by Robert Kirkman) because I wasn't patient enough to wait for the show lol. After that, I've read a few more Graphic Novels, and now I'll try venturing in the marvel comics, but there are so many, and I don't know how to start, what to read, what not to read, order of reading, idk, I just really need some help. I'm in the final stretch of the The Walking Dead Series, and would love to, after finishing it, dive right the way into the marvel comics.

Thought project superpowers was a fun read, reslly like the idea of modern writers/artists bringing now public domain superheroes back to life

Timed to Shakespeare Day, Joe Quesada is announcing ‘Undiscover’d’, a new line of comic books from Amazing Comics based on the timeless works of the Bard.

List is up! Sorry I'm late again, between the kitten and being busy at work plus all the normal stuff I've been swamped! I'm so far behind on my reading lol, and I haven't even picked up in a few weeks! Well let's see, what's for me?

Rob Liefeld: It’s a love letter to the team books that I grew up with, like The Avengers, The Titans, The Justice League, and The Fantastic Four that I grew up. Those books don't exist anymore, and let me tell you something, I miss them. There's a different dynamic. They don't approach these books in the same way. So, this is my love letter, and I think it's kind of a How To Do Team Books manual.

I developed a love for graphic novels around ten years ago. Back then, I lined a bookshelf with volumes. Now my comics are digital, and I'm enjoying them even more.

We now live in darker and more morally ambiguous times. Anti-immigrant and right-wing parties have gained ground in the US and across Europe. Democracy appears to be losing its appeal for a generation. More than half of young people in the UK between the ages of 13 and 27 believe the country would be a better place if a strong leader was in charge who “did not have to bother with parliament and elections,” a poll showed in February.

One of Image's latest releases, writer Deniz Camp's Assorted Crisis Events, is one of the boldest, most exciting uses of the comic book medium in decades. With only one issue released so far, Assorted Crisis Events has already surpassed many of the mainstream titles being released today. It's complete and utter proof that the comic book industry is as creatively free as ever, and that the medium has so much to offer that audiences can't experience anywhere else.

As I noted a few months back, 1950 was a major turning point in the history of EC Comics. Max Gaines had been one of the premier figures in the history of comic books in the United States, along with the development of the modern comic book format at nearly every step of the way, from the first hit comic books (which were collections of newspaper comic strips) to the launch of Superman in Action Comics #1 (HOW much Gaines was involved in that monumental point in comic book history has long been up for debate, but what isn't is that he was at least SOMEwhat involved in it), then to the launch of All-American Publications, a partner company to DC Comics, where Gaines' company introduced some of the most famous superheroes of all-time, like Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and Ma Hunkel. Okay, maybe not all of the heroes are world-famous...I guess not everyone knows Green Lantern the way they do Wonder Woman and Ma Hunkel.

Garth Ennis spins a zombie tale, only instead of zombies, it's every infant in the world under the age of 1 suddenly turned into raging non-verbal adults.

Al Ewing‘s script for Absolute Green Lantern #1 evokes the spirit of H.P. Lovecraft. There is more horror than awe to the weird power that seems to have chosen Hal Jordan. The general tone is far closer to a Junji Ito manga than E. E. “Doc” Smith’s space opera.

The sixth standalone comic for Avatar: The Last Airbender takes place after the show, and is best read after the The Search and Smoke & Shadow graphic novel trilogies.

If there were ever a time to “wage war on billionaires”, as the promo blurb for Patrick Horvath’s Free For All puts it, it is right here and now. This one-shot from the Eisner-nominated cartoonist, and publisher Oni Press. provides “a brutal new vision of capitalism by combat”. The premise is one that most readers will no doubt relish. Somewhere in the near-ish future the World Finance League – an organisation with a remit to benefit all of humanity – randomly selects billionaires and gives them an ultimatum. Either give away half their wealth or defend everything they possess in a battle to the death in a future sports-style gladiatorial arena.

Alliance Entertainment Holding Corporation has announced that it has been selected as the winning bidder to acquire substantially all of the assets of Diamond Comic Distributors after Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. Alliance Entertainment is a global distributor and wholesaler specializing in music, movies, video games, electronics, arcades, and collectables. The proposed acquisition, which is subject to Bankruptcy Court approval, includes Diamond Comic Distributors (U.S.), Alliance Game Distributors (no relation), Diamond Select Toys & Collectibles, and Collectible Grading Authority. No mention of Diamond UK, Diamond Select Toys, FandomWorld, Gentle Giant or Free Comic Book Day. I am hearing that there were multiple competitive bids and that the price Alliance paid was significantly more than anyone anticipated, which should be good news for publishers.

According to the announcement, Alien Books will receive distribution, marketing, sales analysis, and logistical support from IDW, while retaining creative control of editorial. Other than mentioning that IDW will essentially be the distributor for Alien via its existing relationships – PRH for both the DM and bookstores – details are scant. However it does make sense for Alien, which publishes a wide-ranging line of European and South American imports, manga, and perhaps most important to the US market, the relaunch of the Valiant Comics superhero universe. One recent release – the classic SF tale Black Star by Barriero and Giménes – is an example of the high quality material Alien produces that will benefit from being in PRH’s catalog. And of course the Valiant Beyond will play well there as well.

Not long after New Years, I started to see an intriguing image all over comics Bsky. It’s the one just a bit higher up in this post. Drawn by artist Dennis Fujitake, a dog-man stands in a space suit, holding a two-handed laser rifle, looking stoically into the distance as a sci-fi armada floats behind him. The image, as I say, was intriguing, but moreover, it was being shared by a number of trusted comics curators, singing the praises of the book for which it was the cover — The Dalgoda Omnibus.

The first of several orders arrived today. I'll have to reread the earlier volumes of Monstress first, but I'll start with Isola.

From The World Of Minor Threats Welcome To Twilight #1 - More Minor Threats, not the OGs but so far it's all good, so I'm in. The world itself it just so neat, I want to know more about the city itself almost more than its "notable" inhabitants. I want to know about the day to day, see some background on stuff only mentioned or hinted at, it's just so neat!

"Mystery of Penquan Island" is the first LoK one-shot graphic novel. It takes place after the show, and focuses on Mako.

CB Cebulski: In our careers exactly, there's always that Marvel-DC rivalry that people talk about, but at its core, we're fans of each other's work. There's mutual respect on the editorial and creative level, and we really enjoyed working together. This was a really good project to have done, but I think there's another white whale; we got the omnibuses out, but maybe there's another white whale we haven't seen for 20 years or so?

The cover and the inside art is drawn by Jim Lee, who is my favorite Punisher artist. He gives Frank a proper grittiness, has exaggerated but rarely wonky figures, and pays attention to drawing guns both in making them look like more than collections of random bits and in choosing unusual models. In the cover Frank has an L86 LSW in hand while speeding towards tropical danger. While the LSW sadly doesn't actually appear in the comic, the Sterling submachinegun is a decent consolation prize.

Yanick Paquette is one of my favourite comic book artists, including work on Terra Obscura, Seven Soldiers, Batman, X-Men, Swamp Thing and Wonder Woman. But he wants everyone to be a better artist. And on Substack, that is what he is setting out to do, with his Secrets Of Drawing posts, illustrated Scott McCloud Understanding Comics style. He tells me, "I write and draw to scratch my pedagogical itch", that's a desire to teach, "and help fellow artists as I've been helped by my other masters before. They are free masterclasses and turn out to be more time-consuming than expected to produce. Knowing that they are being read and enjoyed goes a long way to justifying carving out time for this little pro bono project."

Abstract

There used to be two types of Godzilla stories you could tell. The first used Godzilla as a metaphor, mostly for the horrors of atomic warfare – see the original 1954 Godzilla or Godzilla Minus One. The second has Godzilla acting as a protector of the Earth, often battling other monsters or teaming up with them – Legendary’s MonsterVerse built an entire franchise on this concept alone. But Godzilla: Heist #1 from Van Jensen and Kelsey Ramsay takes a different approach, seeing the King of the Monsters unwittingly play accomplice to a grand heist.

Following the previously announced Godzilla Vs X-Men, Godzilla Vs Fantastic Four and Godzilla Vs Spider-Man, I get the rather predictable word that it will be followed by Godzilla Vs Avengers #1 one-shot for June. However, that still leaves two of the six slots unfilled. Might one of them be Godzilla Vs Hulk? And the other, either Godzilla Vs Deadpool or Godzilla Vs Jeff The Land Shark? Anyway, I do know Godzilla Vs Avengers #1 one-shot for June for sure, with covers by Lee Garbett, Mike Allred and Nick Bradshaw. But that is all. The first, Godzilla Vs FF is out in a month.

Acclaimed comic book creator Brian K. Vaughan has commented on the renewed success of his prescient 2015 Image Comics series We Stand On Guard. Given the present political tensions between the United States and Canada, Vaughan though grateful for the book's comeback, hopes its premise firmly remains fiction.

Dark Horse Comics will publish acclaimed Spanish comic book creator Alex Vede's original graphic novel, Riptide, in English for the first time. The book will arrive on August 20, three months after Vede's first graphic novel with the publisher, Yucatan 1512, debuts in May.

Superheroes dominated the comic industry for decades, and while DC and Marvel remain the two biggest comic publishers in the world, reader interests have shifted. Creators are branching off to tell their own kinds of stories beyond heroes and villains in capes. Fans need only look past DC and Marvel to comic publishers such as Image and BOOM! Studios.

Last year IGN broke the news that actor Thomas Jane is making the jump to comics with the horror series The Lycan. With that series about to debut on the Comixology Originals platform, we can now debut an exclusive preview of the first chapter.

Free Comic Book Day is owned and run by Diamond Comic Distributors. The company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and has seen a number of publishers pull out of Diamond completely as a result. With tariffs threatened on comics published in Canada – which is most of the Free Comic Book Day titles – how will all this affect Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, the 3rd of May? Well, first, the comics have all been printed by now and have been shipped across the border for the USA. That is not an issue, this year around at least. And Diamond Comic Distributors is fully stocked with them, ready to send out to stores if they are still operating as they intended. Copies are meant to arrive in stores in the middle of April before the bankruptcy period is over. Some sites have reported the 1st of April as the bankruptcy cut-off date, but that is wrong. However, some titles available in bundles of ten, twenty, twenty-five or fifty will only be available from Penguin Random House or Lunar Distribution, with singles through Diamond, especially from publishers such as Mad Cave Studios and Vault Comics that recently left Diamond in toto. And DC titles will only be available through Lunar. Here's looking at how and where comic book retailers will have been ordering them;

And anything with multiverses and parallel worlds, reading tom strong made me feel some chidlike wonder. Enjoyed the dark undertones.

Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld has cut ties with Marvel after expressing disappointment with his alleged treatment at the premiere of the latest film.

I mean, yeah, just because it's Myanmar doesn't mean the person has to be Burmese... but sheesh.

What a fantastic read, and really wanted to share it with someone. It got on my radar via some 2024 recommendation lists. I went in fully blind, not knowing what to expect.

A woman from New Zealand has filed a civil lawsuit against bestselling British author Neil Gaiman and his estranged wife, musician Amanda Palmer, accusing Gaiman of repeatedly sexually assaulting her while she was working as the couple’s babysitter and nanny.

Marvel Comics recently told the New York Times that they have "no new books forthcoming" from Neil Gaiman. Gaiman had written a number of comic book series for Marvel over the years, including Eternals and 1602. But most recently, that was just the republication, recreation and continuance of the series he had written for Eclipse Comics back in the nineties, Miracleman, and which had been tied up in legal problems for thirty years. After first republishing Alan Moore's original run, Marvel Comics then published Miracleman The Golden Age by Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham, as they had originally created it back then, followed by The Silver Age, which had been partially completed. Only for artist Mark Buckingham to radically redraw the entire arc from scratch, and take over more of the writing duties for its conclusion, to much acclaim. This was then to have been followed by the unpublished The Dark Age. Mark Buckingham would take the creative lead on the project, though based on discussions, deliberation and collaboration with Gaiman. But that seems no longer to be the case. I understand Buckingham ceased work on The Dark Age last summer and asked to be reassigned. He has recently been working on Amazing Spider-Man at Marvel Comics instead.

The decision by the US government to make their tariffs against Canada, Mexico and China kick in this Tuesday means that comic books already printed in Canada and going through shipping processes are about to rocket in price. Not for this Wednesday; the comics have already left Canada for the USA, and plenty of them are already in store. But next week? Those comics, just in time for Valentine's Day, may be the first to get caught up in the new 25% tariffs being imposed by the USA. Remember, comic book stores are not obliged to charge the cover price for their comics, and if they have to pay 25% more, then you will pay 25% more. With Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, IDW, Dynamite, and Boom, most publishers printing their monthly comics in Canada expect a four-dollar comic to be a five-dollar comic overnight. And we can say goodbye to Todd McFarlane's $2.99 Spawn line. Expect that to be the case going forward unless a) savings can be made and b) US printers can be found. The latter are generally more expensive than those in Canada, don't have the comic book experience of Canadian printers, and demand for their services will be going up as well, so their prices will, too… Bad Idea Comics is already feeling the $200,000 pain.

Autistic comic book fans are being invited to participate in a Cambridge University study looking at how best to support neurodivergent people to enjoy cartoons.

it appears that Penguin Random House intends to pass on any unpaid debt they have from Diamond to IDW and, possibly, the other publishers as well. Penguin Random House is the biggest creditor for Diamond, to the tune of nine million dollars. And it seems that they may want IDW and the other publishers to make up these losses out of future earnings. Which may explain Marvel's interest. In the audit section of the report, prepared by an independent auditor, it is noted that there is "Substantial Doubt About the Entity's Ability to Continue as a Going Concern," the entity being IDW, and stating;

The Good Omens Kickstarter was set up to fund the creation of a graphic novel adaptation by Colleen Doran of the Good Omens novel by Sir Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. A remarkably successful crowdfunding scheme, it raised £2,419,973 from 36,867 backers. The Terry Pratchett Estate, which runs the Good Omens Kickstarter, had offered refunds to donors after the original Tortoise Media allegations until last November. However, the estate now says that it "will no longer maintain this freeze in light of new articles and allegations. While we cannot speak further on the subject at present, we have chosen to reopen a short refund window for those who would no longer like to support the graphic novel until Friday, 7th February 2025."

DC started running in-house ads for a re-launch of the Elseworlds line with Greg Smallwood's Barbarian Batman back in August... and... well... Nothin'. Pulled a month before release.

The series featuring Batman beating up aliens in spaaaaaace got off to a good start, but it's been a long time since #5 came out and the final issue hasn't been seen.

With two new Lex books out this week, it made me stop and go... Wait, what about that other one? When was it? 2023????!

Comic book writer and producer Marc Bernardin has posted on Blue Sky about the future of the comic book adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Anansi Boys. Bernadin adapted the series from Neil Gaiman's original novel, drawn by Shaun Martinborough, and published by Dark Horse Comics. It is one of a number of such titles from the publisher that have adapted some of Neil Gaiman's adult fantasy works, including American Gods and Norse Mythology.

Mike Mignola redefined how comics can be made, what they should look like and what they can be with Hellboy. Now, 30 years on the artist's new shared universe, Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown, is set to shake things up all over again.

Found this at my local comic shop today, Billi 99 was originally a 4 issue book published by Dark Horse Comics in 1991, back when Y2K and 9/11 and the Patriot Act seemed oh, man, so far away!

Diamond Comics Distributors, one of the biggest companies involved in getting graphic novels into physical retailers for purchase, is filing for bankruptcy and scaling its business back as the industry braces itself for a new wave of economic challenges.
