First, a hardware question. I'm looking for a computer to use as a... router? Louis calls it a router but it's a computer that is upstream of my whole network and has two ethernet ports. And suggestions on this? Ideal amount or RAM? Ideal processor/speed? I have fiber internet, 10 gbps up and 10 gbps down, so I'm willing to spend a little more on higher bandwidth components. I'm assuming I won't need a GPU.

I've been running a docker-based linkding instance on one of my servers for a couple years now, using it with the linkding firefox extension, and it's been awesome. I'm still able to access the page and use it to go to links normally, but, as of yesterday, when I try to bookmark something with the extension it throws an "Internal Server Error" and fails to save it. Same thing happens when I try to add a bookmark "manually" via the linkding page.

I'm still running a 6th-generation Intel CPU (i5-6600k) on my media server, with 64GB of RAM and a Quadro P1000 for the rare 1080p transcoding needs. Windows 10 is still my OS from when it was a gaming PC and I want to switch to Linux. I'm a casual user on my personal machine, as well as with OpenWRT on my network hardware.

My ISP uses CG NAT which is stopping me from reaching my internal network, so I'm thinking about using Tailscale to allow me to connect to my server and hence to my internal network.

I've been running my server without a firewall for quite some time now, I have a piped instance and snikket running on it. I've been meaning to get UFW on it but I've been too lazy to do so. Is it a necessary thing that I need to have or it's a huge security vulnerability? I can only SSH my server from only my local network and must use a VPN if I wanna SSH in outside so I'd say my server's pretty secure but not the furthest I could take it. Opinions please?

So I've got jellyfin all set up, but I'm having some issues with files downloading from qbittorrent and Knowing exactly how and when they get moved over, either the sonar or jellyfin repository, whichever is the final destination. This is important because my torrenting drive is separate from my media drive. I have noticed some shows and files staying on my torrenting drive while others go over to the media drive. And I'm and to figure out where the issue might be that's causing this, I think I need a refresher on exactly how and when these files are supposed to be moved over. Since I can't find any sort of documentation inside the apps.

Hey all, I've got ZFS pool created and just create a VM drive in that pool like normal, then Jellyfin just has that drive mounted. I think I'm losing the best parts of ZFS through this manner.

I've been seeing news about the Helium network for quite a while now and have been curious about it. However, it has been near-impossible to find information on it that isn't either crypto-hypeman speak or "lol crypto LMAO". Not a big fan of crypto myself - just interested in the prospect of contributing to a large-scale infrastructure or computing project. I'll be vacationing for a month and want to setup a portable jellyfin server/stack. I'm not sure how good the internet will be, website says 300 mbps, but I won't know until I'm there, so not sure remote playback is an option. I already have a n100 minipc I bought for a backup firewall, so I'd just need to buy RAM for it.

Hi, I'm fairly new to the self-hosted universe but I like the idea of self-hosting media (I've looked at Jellyfin and Plex). But as I understand this requires quite some money and a lot of work. I don't think it's worth it if I put in all that effort just for myself but I'd love to build a small private streaming between me and my friends. We used to share and swap blu-rays after all, so it would be cool to build a shared collection.

Hello selfhosted! Sometimes I have to transfer big files or a large amounts of small files in my homelab. I used rsync but specifying the IP address and the folders and everything is bit fiddly. I thought about writing a bash script but before I do that I wanted to ask you about your favourite way to achieve this. Maybe I am missing out on an awesome tool I wasn't even thinking about.

Objects types for things like hardware, software, deployments, technologies, and tie-ins to my other LifeOs databases. I've never done any sort of home networking or self-hosting of any kind but thanks to Jellyfin and Mastodon I've become interested in the idea. As I understand it, physical servers ("bare metal" correct?) are PCs intended for data storing and hosting services instead of being used as a daily driver like my desktop. From my (admittedly) limited research, dedicated servers are a bit expensive. However, it seems that you can convert an old PC and even laptop into a server (examples here and here). But should I use that or are there dedicated servers at "affordable" price points. Since is this is first experience with self-hosting, which would be a better route to take?

On occasion I find myself needing to send a file at least a few gigabytes in size to a friend across our slow ISPs but haven't found a satisfying solution. I usually end up creating a private torrent with the announce address of my own IP. Even though it's slow - it basically never reaches my max upload speed for some reason, it is at least resilient if there are ever any network glitches.

A recent Armbian kernel upgrade bricked my entire Rock64 cluster (5 cards) and after a week debugging, it seems beyond repair.

Hi, I got a small server as a for-fun-project and I really enjoy having it. With all the stuff going on in the world I would like to self host more things, but I'm pretty new to the scene. So far it's just an old desktop with Ubuntu server os acting as media server. I would like to add some sort of lightweight and preferably open source file share akin to Google Drive with the ability to save/upload, view and edit files on the server from the outside internet. I'd also like a shared calendar that can also be accessed from the internet. Do you have any good recommendations this? Thanks

From what I have seen, rootless podman seems to take more effort (even if marginal) than rootful one. I want to make a more informed decision for the containers, so I would like to ask.

I got a stack of PCS that are very similar if not identical. Third gen i7, 8 gigs of ram, one terabyte hdd, all but one are the same HP model with the same motherboard, etc too. I upgraded the RAM in a few of them, and I have enough spare TB hard drives to put an extra in each. Two have Nvidia GeForce 210 gpus, and the unique one out of the bunch I'll probably throw in a spare RX 570 I have.

Recently saw a post regarding pi-hole, and I am considering to try it out. I am wondering if it would fit my usecase, so I want to ask about specifically what it solves.

Currently have nice long docker compose file that hosts my PiHole V6 container (along with a bunch of other containers) however, reason i ask this question is because whenever I go to pull an updated image and recreate the container I experience about 20 minutes of no DNS resolution which to my knowledge is due to the NTP clock being out of sync.

I have no idea why this is happening on my arch linux machine. I was trying to set it up as a client device, and now i have no internet connection on my wired network. This is bare metal not docker. I just wanted to add the device to my tailnet.

I dont mean to be a bother, but recently i got wiregaurd setup so myself and my friends can access resources such as my server. i have it setup for the client and the server to only allow 192.168.8.170. To be tunneled, so for example my friends can google and resolve DNS just fine and its all in there network, then when they want to access the server it will be at 192.168.8.170 and the docker services will run on ports for example 8080:80. and to be honest it works great for me and friend 1. but for friend 2 DNS doesnt resolve???
