Lemmy is a really great piece of software and i'm happy to use it but i have to say the quality of the content is really low and the way the platform is structured isn't helping. The frontpage is filled with memes and news from third parties and most discussions are happening below stupid headlines. If i were to document a live event i have no idea were i should post.

'Be nice' is a great idea in concept but when it comes down to concrete justification for post deletions and bans, it just becomes a general tool of oppression

Thank goodness this never happened to me cause my parents were good parents, it's just as much the childrens home as the parents and children should be allowed to say "I don't feel comfortable with another man or woman living hear" Its the parents responsibility to make sure their children are comfortable and feel safe around a new adult. The parent should plan a public meet and greet parent, child, step and after each one the children should have the right to say no more and it end there.

Upscaling and Frame Generation are disasters meant to conceal unfulfilled promises from GPU makers for 4k gaming, and as a coverup for the otherwise horrible performance some modern games have, even at 1080/1440p resolutions.

Buyers obviously have 3 choices when this happens: A/B) follow the prompt and write positive/negative feedback which is sometimes published as a review on the item/seller's page, or C) ignore the prompt, in which case no feedback is posted on the page. I think part of the reason that many Americans have the mindset they do is because the US thrived after WW2 by not having any large scale infrastructure damage. War torn areas force people to become more caring and work together. Being isolated and never having directly experienced war caused a reinforcement of exceptionalism and individualism. I think a war on its soil would do a large amount to change peoples mindsets.

Recently over the past couple of months, I've seen political discussion on every single social media (yes, that includes Lemmy) become a bear fight full of propaganda. Twitter/X is becoming a racist hellhole with people hating Jews, Black people and Muslims for existing whilst Lemmy is quickly fostering extremism. There is no where on the Internet, except for small chat channels, that is normal. What do I mean by normal?

I saw the movie in high school, when it came out on VHS, and I loved it. I bought the book, and couldn't put it down. It was perhaps my favorite piece of sci-fi for a while. I thought John Travolta was delightfully hammy, and that the movie was extremely quotable and fun.

I don't agree when the term "drugs and alcohol" is used as this is implying that alcohol is not a drug. The term feels manipulative and purposeful. It is frustrating to see the social acceptance for a harmful drug because it is taxable and socially accepted, but other drugs such as cannabis and psycadellics are heavily stigmatized. Still in large number of places and society's these drugs are not socially accepted. If a drugs legallity was based purely on the damage it can do to your body, alcohol and cigarette would certainly be illegal.

With game pass popping off the last 18 months it seems like Xbox has really hit their stride as a publishing house. Admittedly they've largely done this by throwing billions upon billions of dollars to buy IP, but Expedition 33, Palworld, blue Prince and other hits popping off shows this hasn't exclusively been the case.

I originally watched season 1 (great experience), then I skipped seasons 2 and 3 because of the bad feedback. Decided to check out season 4 because I like the setting and Jodie Foster. Season 4 was solid, but I didn't like the ending.

Yeah, the stories can be really great, some of the best in gaming, especially GTA4 and the RDR games, and this is more targeted towards GTA5. But oh man, these games feel so fucking sloppy control wise. I push my controller in one direction for a moment and my character takes like 2 steps in that direction. Aiming feels clunky and you basically have to rely on auto aim. GTA5 is also piss easy. Like, the only reason I have ever died in GTA5 is accidently driving into an explosive or off a ledge.

I think this is an unpopular opinion, at least among my star wars friends it is, but I genuinly think that The Last Jedi is better than The Force Awakens. I think it's more interesting, I think that the visuals are cool, I like the music more. Now I dont think its great, it has a ton of problems, and it probably has the worst fight choreography, i dont like how they portrayed Luke Skywalker, and I think that it was dumb that Holdo didnt tell Poe what her plan was.

There is no way to play out a full story by splitting the screen time for 3 stories. Even splitting it for 2 stories is not a good idea. By splitting the time that many ways it’s basically impossible to really flesh out a story and add depth. In a one hour episode you really only get 40 minutes of air time. If you split that for two stories you get 20 minutes of screen time to tell a story. 3 ways? Yeah now you are just wasting a show. You only get 13 minutes to tell a story.

I think any sane world, someone would have stepped in a decade ago as an advocate, and gotten them the combination of mental health care and accountability explained to them in compassionate terms they could understand. There has never needed to be a fucking wiki dedicated to this person.

Ellie’s character model in the game is clearly based on Elliot Page before he transitioned. Go watch Juno, the resemblance is uncanny. Elliot won’t do it for obvious reasons so they had to get a replacement.

Holy shit, I need to rant about this because it’s driving me insane. Lately, it feels like every new show drops a single episode and then forces you to wait months for the rest.

After just seeing so many articles of people being sad I really just have to say the pope was an asshole. You don't even have to do good research to see that this guy and his administration was still hiding pedophiles, hating gay people, and generally being a jerk all while pretending he was better than everyone else. The only thing he did was say he loved everyone and be a nice guy on camera which literally anyone could pretend to do. Meanwhile his administration was just more of the same shit. Just creating some counterpoint to the nonsense narrative I keep seeing.

It’s lazy. It has no place in quality communities. If you are a mod and feel so overwhelmed unable to keep up with the posts in your communities, then you need to please consider bringing on other quality mods and /or step down and let someone else do the job to help you.

If the image or text is generated it should be labeled as such, and failing to label it should be grounds to remove the post. AI slop is a plague and its only going to get worse as the tech matures (if it hasn't already peaked).

10 of the last 10 years were the hottest on record. It's time. I know so many people that will give lip service to the environment and then think nothing of taking multiple flights per year on the flimsiest of pretexts.

I think it's good that it exist though it being own by giant corporation and the copyright issues along with it is questionable. But in terms increasing productivity it's obvious. Though everyone can generate but not everyone has an artistic mindset and be able to produce what their thinking. Artist should leverage it to increase or get inspiration for their next big thing, essentially treat it like those custom brushes but on a higher level. Imagine animators having the ability to tweak movements in between frames making it super crisp without much effort. All they will have to do now is produce key frames and describe the in between process. Graphic artist generating starting scenes which they can work further to do some concept art. No longer having to spend overtime animating a scene for an episode that is to be aired the next day. A mangaka having to draw backgrounds for their manga. This means no need to do overtime to reach a certain quality that customers demand. Though the question it replacing artist entirely at some point in the future, I don't think it will happen since people in general especially to art wants a human touch on things. Though if that time comes we might have a bigger question to answer.

I get it, prices of games going up sucks but games rose to about $60 (cad) during the wii era. Put that into an inflation calculator and you end up with about $90 nowadays, it's not really a price hike out of line with general inflation. The switch 2 pricing isn't out of line with AAA PS5 games either ($80 for a digital copy has already been the case for a while there).

Just looked it up and the entire first page of searches is about how 'guys' is masculine and insensitive to women. I disagree. I think the masculinization of the term is like an unneeded extra filter placed over 'guy' but the term itself is innocent. Guy Fawkes was a real person. He did something that caused him to be a symbol of the common person. There is nothing gendered about that. It's the patriarchal culture that then assumed 'common person' refers to males. When I think of Guy Fawkes, it is his actions, not what's in his pants, that is important. So, while there are many needlessly sexist and sexual phrases in English, I do not view ''Guy" as one of them and, instead, view it as a victim of the patriarchy just like you and me. It isn't an inappropriate phrase to change or remove, it's one to reclaim for all people; which is exactly in the spirit of the symbol of who Guy Fawkes is.

Until March 10th, the Tesla stock dropped dramatically to a low of $222.15, and the articles posted that day were reasonable. Honestly, it was lower last spring at $142.05 in April 2024. Everything after March 10th were not reasonable or reflective of reality.

People glorify the actions he took, but have no intention of doing anything to improve society. Say what you will about assasinating someone who is objectively an awful person, the folks who spread these memes do little more than that. Spread memes. Want to make the world a better place? It's as easy as pickin up litter in the grocery store parking lot walking in or volunteering in a soup kitchen. Make the world the kind of place you want to live in with small steps rather than (or in addition to) glorify someone who took large ones.

I'm not saying polls are wrong. I'm just saying the way the news media reports on them isn't helpful. Polling should be used by organizations internally but not be offered up to public as some sort of measuring stick to go off of.

People today cannot go a moment without crying about how they've been ghosted by someone else. But they don't really think about relevance when it comes to gaining friends and maintaining them.

Let me preface with, I really enjoyed the game and couldn't put it down but after beating the Outer Wilds base game, I have thoughts and I think this would get down voted to oblivion in the Outer Wilds group so here I am. This is just my experience but the game was sold to me as this inventive organic puzzle solving adventure where you'd stumble upon clues and solve puzzles but in reality it's a journal scrap hunting game. There are circular glyphs on every planet that tell you how to solve almost every puzzle. I spent 5 hours ignoring these glyphs cause I assumed they were nothing more than lore dumps but in reality they are progress gates. I assumed this game would work more like Animal Well where the game tells you literally nothing and you have to experiment with your tools and knowledge to solve puzzles but nope. I'd hesitate to even call this game a puzzle game, it's honestly more of a casual exploration game which there is nothing wrong with that, but seems more accurate.

Reasons to just do away (I am not suggesting a government ban) on competive sports. Ex. basketball, football, baseball, damn near everything else. I wasn't always like this. Had a conversation with wife of a co-worker 20 some years ago and thought she was nuts. Funny how time and reconsideration can change a person outlook.

If someone writes about things they *think* will happen, but those things never materialize, they shouldn’t just get to brush it under the rug and act like they never said it. You’ve made millions of people worried over literally nothing. That should come with reputational consequences - not just for the journalist, but also for the platform that amplified their speculation.

I haven't played since before Wizards started pushing Commander, at that time called EDH. I felt the Standard Format was a perfect setup to keep the game fresh and innovative while still making money, and the Legacy Format was perfect for the people who had cards that are no longer in Standard. I think the Commander Format killed a perfect system, and Wizards/Hasbro are just trying everything to make money and keep the game mostly unplayable with the licensed tie-ins.

Not every student needs a rigorous scientific education. Not every parent will demand one. Not every public school will require or offer one. My claim is that Christians absolutely should. Likely other religions as well, I use Christian merely because it's what I'm most familiar with.

I really cannot understand the fanfare of "warm weather" places like Texas, Florida, Arizona, Hawaii, and the Gulf Coast. I feel like society has a tendency to idolize warm weather destinations like those.

Design Flaws + Solutions Notwithstanding the following : Despicable//illegal posts should absolutely be deleted. Same from likely comments. But aside from that ... Features creating user disengagement and disinterest : Arbitrary deletions : Since not following communities rules results in posts being deleted. Since this includes active conversation inside such posts. Since such community rules are quite arbitrary and difficult to judge by moderators. ... There has to be a better way than deleting such posts in such circumstances. Design proposal : Post unlinking // relinking : A better design would allow moderator's action (or even bad enough vote totals) to unlink an off-topic-post from a community without deleting it from the instance (site). Multi-linking of posts : Better yet, a single post could be simultaneously linked to many communities even across many instances while maintaining one single global space of conversations. Automatic anti-duplication Creating duplicates of a post should be prevented automatically ... what should be prevented is the creation of new post linking to the same web page (same URL) as an already existing post does ... unless maybe with special permissions or if made after a long enough elapsed time. New design's benefits : This should result in a better user experience by grouping all discussions from one topic inside a unique post ... not dividing into multiple concurrent discussions, almost simultaneously, inside different (( posts // communities // instances )) what is in fact a single topic. This would also provide peace of mind against arbitrary deletions. Benefits for moderators This would also decrease some drama (user to moderator feuds) and simplify moderator's work.

Especially when they promote and use it out of "moral motivation" to "fight against twitter/big tech". You're still using a platform owned by one company. They're not really decentralized. There's nothing stopping them to go down the same path twitter did. They're funded by some questionable investors... Or, to quote something I recently read: "BlueSky is decentralized in the same way Total Energies is a green company."

Ok so first off I don't mean that games are too accessible to people with disabilities or anything like that. This is more of a critique of how strategy games shows you the ramification of your actions, even before you do the action.
