Maybe he just likes summer breaks as well. Then he gets back in the fall, and is all like "oh shit I need a new plan to kill that kid, uh...maybe I can send a man rat to sleep with his best friend? It'll take me at least until the spring to get that going, though."
"M-my Lord..."
*"Yess? What is it Pettigrew?"*
"Y-your appearance, my Lord... w-won't the others ask questions about w-where you've been?"
*"Oh pleasse. Like I'm the first Dark Lord to get a tan."*
"I was... I was r-referring to y-your Hawaiian shirt, my Lord."
*"..."*
*"Look, my luggage was delayed at Gatwick and they said they'd deliver it today. Okay?"*
It's pretty wild to think that of all the books, only the 4th one involves Voldemort plotting to kill Harry at the end of the school year. He's not in the 2nd or 3rd books and doesn't interact with Harry in the 6th book. He does try to kill Harry at the end of the school year in the 1st, 5th, and 7th books, but his plots in those weren't directly about killing Harry.
His plot in the 4th is more about getting his body back and making a demonstration to the death eaters that he's their lord once again. Killing Harry is just a means to that end.
He does want to use Harry to get his body back, which only required a little blood and not his Harry's death, but his plan was to also kill him there. Crouch even brings up that Voldemort wanted to kill him that night. It's different from the 1st book where he only tries to kill Harry after Harry shows up to ruin his plans and the 7th book where Harry forces his arrival at the school by targeting the horcruxes.

Voldemort's plans are always akin to Doctor Evil's. Needlessly complicated, and easily thwarted.
"I want sharks with friggin' wands on their heads! Is that too much to ask?!"
Are they at least ill-tempered sea bass?
